3D Mammography at Arnot Health
3D Mammagrams take multiple images of the breast in 1mm slices. Doctors get a clearer image of masses, making it easier to detect breast cancer. This helps catch more cancers, reduce false positives, and catch cancer earlier.
Benefits of 3D Mammography
- Help reduce false positive rates by 15%
- 40% decrease in call back which means less worry, anxiety and cost
- Increases cancer detection rates, especially in patients with dense breasts
- Detects up to 40% more invasive cancers
Our Health Center for Women located in Elmira is an ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence Facility.
Your Comfort Matters
Arnot Health is now offering our patients a new option in mammograms designed to decrease anxiety and increase comfort -- 3D Mammography using the Senographe Pristina(TM). This new machine was designed from the ground up with input from women for a more comfortable experience and clearer image.
The elegant design of our new 3D mammography equipment is more than just aesthetic; the gentle, rounded corners of the image receptor, where the woman places her breasts, completely changes her stance compared to the traditional mammogram. Instead of tensing pectoral muscles while grabbing the traditional handgrips -- which can make it hard to acquire high quality images -- women can lean comfortably on the armrests, relaxing their muscles to simplify positioning, compression, and improve image quality. The image receptor is also thinner than the previous design, so it doesn't jab into a woman's ribs
Who Should Have a 3D Mammogram
Every woman can benefit from Digital Breast Tomosynthesis but it is particularly recommended for
- Women with dense breast tissue
- Women with a personal history of breast cancer
The American College of Radiology recommends the following guidelines for women who do not have any symptoms of breast cancer:
- Women who are 35-40 years old should have a baseline mammogram (i.e. a first mammogram) from which following mammograms can be compared.
- Women who are age 40 and older should have a mammogram every year..
When You Feel Less Anxious, We See a Better Image
Our 3D mammography suite is a special room designed to help reduce the discomfort and stress of a mammogram. Using evidence-based approaches to reduce anxiety, we simultaneously stimulate scent, sight, and sound through soothing visuals and sounds, scent diffusers, and low LED lighting.
